WELCOME TO PRONESP, HELP SAVE THE AMAZON RAINFOREST!!!

People from different parts of the world are aiming to help save the Amazon rainforest. There is an Indigenous Organization in Brazil that is right there in the heart of the Amazon. Supporting its projects and three of the tribes there, we can really make the difference. How can you help? Get to know it first:

PRONESP stands for Nova Esperança Sustainable Development Program, which is an indigenous organization based on communitarian work in the Roraima State, Brazil. It is located in the Nova Esperança Indigenous Community, São Marcos Indian Land. Also it has a representation in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil.

According to the Indigenous National Foundation – FUNAI (institution that works with Brazilian Indians) currently there are around 534 thousand Indians, connected to 220 tribes, living in 615 indigenous territories, in a total of 13% of the Brazilian territory. A significant part of this population faces structural problems, affecting their social and economic organization.

Thus, PRONESP was created to work with organizational aspects of economic projects to help manage finances and to qualify the indigenous work. In the Roraima State, it coordinates the implementation of an Indigenous Production Unity process to produce fish, regional fruits, among other things. Overall, it involves the Macuxi, Wapixana and Taurepang tribes.

NOVA ESPERANÇA SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - PRONESP

Date of Foundation: January 1st. 2001.

Localization: São Marcos Indigenous Land, Pacaraima City, Roraima State, Amazônia Legal, Brazil.

Tribes: Macuxi, Wapixana and Taurepang

Indigenous Members: 110 people.

Partners: 15 Indian settlements

Total people involved (direct or indirectly): 2543 people.

Mission: to protect the Indigenous interests of the tribes: macuxi, wapixana and taurepang, aiming to improve and qualify the Indigenous work and to promote educational leadership programs towards the sustainable development.

Main Activities: eco-tourism, aquiculture projects, fruits’ production, handcrafts, alternative medicines from local plants based on the tribe’s knowledge and their potentially rich land.

Future Projects: In 2007, the organization transferred its articulation bases from Boa Vista, Capitol of Roraima State to Brasília, Capitol of Brazil, aiming to gather more technical, financial, and technological resources to implement a Indigenous Unity of Production in Roraima State. The project involves fruit and fish production in big scale, which means a capacity of production around 500 ton of fish per cycle and 40 ton of tropical fruits per year until 2012.

PRONESP is an organization that works with its own members’ support. Since 2001 never received any kind of donation to help with operational costs.

Action: This year, in Brasilia, the organization is working to create the Indigenous Federation of Brazil – FIB that will start working in 2010. The goal is to support other Indigenous tribes in Brazil, mainly through production and accessorizing technically aiming to Rural Extension.

Support: Currently, PRONESP counts with a volunteer consultant/ translator and we are looking for other partnerships.
